International Career Highlights

In 1988 he transferred to the basketball club Real Madrid and won the Spanish Cup and the Cup of the Cup’s Winners. He was the first Croatian player to play in the NBA league. From 1989 he played for Portland Trail Blazers, and from 1991 he played for New Jersey Nets.

He participated on the Olympic Games in 1984 (III.), 1988 (II.) and 1992 (II.), and on the World Championships 1986 (III.) and 1990. He also won medals on the European Championships 1987 (III.) and 1989 (I.), as well as on the University Games of 1983 (II.) and 1987 (I.). He was the first captain of the Croatian basketball team.

According to the Italian newspaper La Gazzeta, he was voted the best European basketball player for 1986, 1989, 1992 and 1993. He was chosen to light the flame on the opening of the University games in Zagreb in 1987. For his achievements he was awarded the highest Olympic acknowledgements; Centenary Medal and The Olympic Order, posthumously.

By the initiative of the head of the International Olympic Comitee, Juan Antonio Samaranch, due to his extraordinary achievements in world’s basketball and sports in general the Drazen Petrovic monument was erected in the park of the Olympic Museum in Lausanne on April 29 1995, created by sculptor Vasko Lipovac. On September 27 2002 Drazen Petrovic was admitted to the basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.
