Yugoslavia became world champion in Argentina by defeating the strong Soviet Union team 92 : 75 in the final match played in Buenos Aires. Dražen scored 18 points.
Along with Dražen, the national team that won the third Yugoslav world gold medal under the leadership of coach Dušan Ivković consisted of: Velimir Perasović, Zoran Čutura, Toni Kukoč, Žarko Paspalj, Jurij Zdovc, Željko Obradović, Radisav Ćurčić, Vlade Divac, Arijan Komazec, Zoran Jovanović and Zoran Savić.
In a press statement after the match, Dražen emphasized:
Everything turned out as we expected. This selection is so strong that the Russians had no defense for our deadly attack. It should be emphasized that others teams are not weak, but we are terribly strong and that is why we were able to win the final match so convincingly. If this team fit into the NBA, it would achieve 30 to 35 victories, which is a result worth noting.
