Opening ceremony of the XIV. Summer Universiade, hosted by Zagreb. The motto of the Games was The World of Youth for a World of Peace. Dražen Petrović, as one of the most successful athletes in Yugoslavia at the time, lit a flame at the Maksimir Stadium, in front of student athletes from all around the world.
The funds obtained for the organization of the Universiade were used for urban renewal and construction of the city. During two-year preparations period, Zagreb got nine halls, three swimming pools and Cibona Tower. The Dom Sportova and the Maksimir Stadium were renovated, just as the dilapidated sports complex on Šalata. Over 200 facades on buildings were arranged. On the eve of the Universiade, a new bus station and the Jarun district were built. Student dormitories Stjepan Radić and Cvjetno naselje have been renovated and student athletes were housed in them.
